In 1996, during the rebuilding of his home, Ohtsubo disposed of much of the furniture that had been used for many years. Among them was a wardrobe that had belonged to an elderly family member and his late wife. Before discarding it, Ohtsubo thought, “Why not let plants inhabit it?”
